HoMM 3 is actually kind of cool.

 I tried to get into it probably half a dozen times over the years. 5 kind of clicked, but 3 never did.

I think the problem is that I started with the random map mode. That's what I often do in turn based games. Pick a faction, pick the big map, build a big silly army, play it like an 8 year old.

The campaigns are a lot better, though starting with the generic ass human faction doesn't help. Campaign two is demons and monsters, a big upgrade.
